This plastic shell helmet was introduced in 1949 and featured a one-inch scarlet stripe on a white background. Rather than use padding in the top like modern helmets, the shell helmet had a "suspension strap" design which used webbing to keep the helmet from making contact with the head on impact. A chin strap kept the helmet in place, without a face mask for protection. It was originally issued by Riddell.
