The Buckeyes' Riddell-issued gray football helmets had a few additions in 1956, including either one- or two-bar face masks for protection, ear padding mounted to the inside of the helmet with rivets, and a thinner chin strap. One of the more visible changes was the addition of two-inch numbers to each side. Similar to its predecessors, the helmet retained "suspension straps" as part of its head protection.
